Competitor analysis

While competitors do exist in this space, each has notable shortcomings. The main players in the market — SuperCook, Tasty, and Whisk — all address parts of the problem but fail to deliver a complete solution. SuperCook offers ingredient-based search but suffers from a clunky interface and limited performance, providing only a narrow range of item suggestions. Tasty stands out with its clean UI and strong YouTube presence, but lacks long-term pantry tracking capabilities. Whisk boasts a large recipe database, yet has no effective way to curate recommendations based on individual preferences. These gaps present a clear opportunity for QuickDish to combine the best features of each competitor while addressing their limitations.
The How
Goals
To make QuickDish successful, we need to design with competitor pitfalls in mind, ensuring a superior user experience. SuperCook’s clunky interface can be improved by modernising the UI with strong hierarchy, colour, and spacing, while adding subtle animations and transitions to make the experience engaging as well as functional.
Seamless user flows are essential for both pantry management and recipe recommendations. The recommendation flow should feel casual and enjoyable, like browsing a Pinterest-style explore page when relaxing on the couch. The pantry flow, being new to most users, must be clear, intuitive, and easy to complete, encouraging repeat use and building QuickDish into daily routines.

Ideations
My first design iterations lacked hierarchy. For example, on the home page, all recipe options were presented in similar-sized boxes, making it difficult for users to identify the primary call-to-action and resulting in a flat, uninspiring layout. In the next iteration, I changed the size and structure of the cards, with larger, centrally placed boxes for primary actions. This meant users no longer had to spend cognitive effort figuring out where to click.
I also refined the navigation bar, moving from a bright orange floating design in the first version to a sleeker, modern style in the second. This change addressed accessibility issues when scrolling through the new explore section. To make the explore page more meaningful, I introduced a saved page that mimics Pinterest’s scrolling flow. Finally, I removed some cards from the pantry page to free up white space and give the remaining elements room to breathe.
Overall, I’m happy with the design decisions made in this iteration. The improved hierarchy on the home page creates a clear visual focus, reducing cognitive load and making the primary action obvious. The updated navigation bar feels more modern, solves previous accessibility issues, and integrates smoothly with the new explore section. Adding the saved page enhances the browsing experience, giving users a familiar and engaging way to discover recipes. Simplifying the pantry page by removing excess cards has improved spacing, balance, and overall readability.
These changes collectively make QuickDish more intuitive, visually appealing, and aligned with the goal of delivering a seamless and enjoyable user experience.
